Understanding the Homeowner’s Goal
Tree Pruning-This small property was something special—an 80-year-old shotgun home tucked under two massive Southern Live Oaks (Quercus virginiana). The canopy loomed over the house, gutters, and garden beds.
The client’s top priorities were:
- Reduce risk from storm-damaged limbs
- Increase sunlight in the shady yard
- Keep the oaks looking natural and graceful
Fun Fact: Southern Live Oaks can live over 300 years and grow limbs wider than most trees are tall!
Our Process: Careful Tree Pruning Done Right
We started every step with protection in mind—of people, property, and the trees themselves.
- Climbed using safety harnesses and industry-standard rope systems
- Used STIHL top-handle chainsaws, Silky pole saws, and precision hand tools
- Pruned only 15–20% to maintain canopy health and airflow
- Cleared limbs overhanging the roof and thinned interior growth
We followed ANSI A300 Pruning Standards throughout, working limb by limb to preserve the trees’ natural form.

Project Challenges
This job posed some physical and logistical hurdles:
- Narrow alleyways meant all gear had to be hand-carried
- No crane access due to landscaping and fencing
- Roofline proximity required slow, methodical climbing
DIY Warning: Attempting to prune large trees without training or the right gear can result in serious injury, property damage, or permanent harm to your trees. Always trust a licensed arborist.
“These oaks deserved better than a quick trim. We approach every cut like it matters—because it does. That’s the difference between trimming and true arborist care.”

Arborist Tip: Live oaks should never be topped. It leaves them vulnerable to disease and shortens their lifespan drastically. Always choose directional or thinning cuts instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should live oaks be pruned?
Every 2–5 years, depending on growth, location, and weather exposure. Annual inspections help assess any storm or structure issues.
Can I prune my tree during the summer?
Light pruning is okay, but major work is best done while the tree is dormant—in winter or early spring.
What’s the risk of over-pruning an oak tree?
Over-pruning removes leaves that produce energy for the tree. This stresses the tree, increases disease risk, and can result in decay or dieback.
Is a permit needed to trim a tree in New Orleans?
Only if the tree sits on public property. For this project on private land, no permit was required.
